Calling For Volunteers August 21st and 22nd, 2023 !!

Every August Loaves and Fishes partners with United Way, CFAN, CT Foodshare, NICE, Cathedral of Higher Praise, Beulah Heights Church, West Hills Community Center/The Shack, and New Haven Public Schools, to host a food distribution for New Haven Public School Students!

It is no secret that summer poses an incredible challenge for families who actively experience food insecurity or are in a vulnerable state of food security. Many children benefit from free or reduced lunch during the school year, which alleviates the stress of providing every meal at home.

We are asking our Loaves and Fishes community to sign up for a couple of shifts August 21st or August 22nd to help us get as much food out to families before the school year begins!

Please follow this link for sign up instructions: United Way New Haven Public School August Distribution.

If you have any question please reach us at info@loavesandfishesnh.com

Nuts and Bolts                                                                                                                                                                                        If interested in volunteering, email volunteer@loavesandfishesnh.com or fill out the volunteer sign up google form to receive access to our mailing list and sign up shifts.

Shifts are on Friday morning (8:30am – 11am) and Saturday morning (7am – 11am). Friday shifts are our delivery and packing days, whereas Saturday is our distribution day. If you are coming on Friday, please do not park in the back or the side of the church as these spots are reserved for delivery drivers.

All volunteers should show up at the back door of the church at 57 Olive Street New Haven through the driveway on Chapel, where they will be greeted by a staff member who will review our volunteer expectations, and assign tasks. Volunteers should plan on staying for the entire shift that they sign up for, and should come dressed in clothing that is appropriate to work in, including closed toed shoes.

Volunteers are encouraged to make their own bag of groceries from food being distributed to guests on Saturday mornings.

Standards of Service                                                                                                                                                                              At its core, Loaves and Fishes values volunteers who are committed to offering hospitality to our neighbors. If you choose to volunteer with us, we ask that you be a friendly face, take the time to get to know our guests and volunteers, and commit to recognizing the dignity found in every human being, working hard to provide the highest quality of customer service to our guests.

We pride ourselves in having volunteers who have been here since Loaves and Fishes inception work alongside volunteers who are new to Loaves and Fishes, food justice work, New Haven or volunteering in general! Our longtime volunteers display the qualities that make Loaves and Fishes a welcoming, safe, and open space for everyone. You will see them take on leadership roles on Saturday mornings as well as during the rest of the week to handle logistics, administrative tasks, and to serve as role models and beacons of support.

Loaves and Fishes does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, language, age, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, veteran’s status, or disability, and volunteers should report any instance of discrimination to a designated volunteer captain.

If you have any questions, comments, cares, feedback, or concerns, please talk to a Staff Member or email volunteer@loavesandfishesnh.com
